Wales was the stronghold of the last red kites. At one stage only a handful remained and many of the early offspring came from one single female.
 
It was from this small remaining breeding population, often fed and nurtured by the Welsh farmers in their secret valleys, that these magnificent birds of prey have now re-colonised many areas of England and Scotland and strengthened their hold in Wales.
