The Alchemy of Heirloom Welsh Gold: Why We Can’t "Melt Down and Remake" Old Rings

It is one of the most beautiful, romantic requests we receive: “My grandmother gave us her old Welsh gold wedding ring. Can you melt it down, mix it with some extra gold, and turn it into our two new wedding bands? We'd love to add a bit of Welsh gold into the mix, too.” It sounds simple, poetic, and sustainable. You’re taking a piece of family history and physically weaving it into your new beginning.
But as jewellers, this is where we have to explain the harsh reality of metallurgy and workshop safety. As our expert jeweller Nigel bluntly puts it: "You cannot just melt the old ring along with a little bit more gold. All you would get would be an unworkable, dirty blob." Why is that? If gold melts under a torch, why can’t we just pour it into a new mould? The answer comes down to science, physics, and why the "simple melt-and-pour" approach is a total myth.
The "Dirty Blob" Dilemma (Contamination)
When you look at an old gold ring, you see a shiny piece of history. When a jeweller looks at it, they see decades of microscopic wear and tear.
Gold jewellery isn't just pure gold; it is an alloy mixed with other metals (like copper, silver, or zinc) to make it strong enough to wear. Over time, old rings collect microscopic traces of solder from old resizing jobs, skin oils, dirt, and polishing compounds.
If you heat that ring up with a torch without heavy, industrial chemical refining, all those impurities fuse together. The solder and old alloys break down, causing gas bubbles and brittle spots. Instead of smooth, flowing liquid gold, you get a pitted, brittle, unworkable lump that will crack the moment a jeweller tries to shape it.
The Physics of the Pour (The 50g Rule)
Let’s say you have a 22ct heirloom ring weighing 5 grams, and you want to make two 18ct bands (a 4mm and a 2mm). You might think you just need to add a few grams of extra alloy to get the right weight.
Mathematically, that makes sense. Physically, it fails.
To cast a piece of jewellery, gravity or centrifugal force has to push molten gold into a highly detailed mould. Liquid gold has incredible surface tension; if you only melt a tiny amount (like 10 or 15 grams), it lacks the weight and mass to actually flow. It will simply freeze halfway through the pour.
To successfully cast a clean piece of jewellery, a jeweller needs a critical mass at least 50 grams of clean gold in the crucible to create enough pressure to fill the mould properly. You cannot successfully cast a 5-gram ring with only 5 grams of gold.
The Mystery of the Unmarked Carat
The scenario gets even trickier if an heirloom piece is unmarked, worn down, or from unknown origins. To successfully alter gold from 22ct down to 18ct, a jeweller needs exact, microscopic precision. We have to know precisely what percentage of the ring is pure gold versus alloy.
Without official assay stamps, guessing the breakdown is a gamble. Add the wrong amount of base metal, and the gold will fail legal UK hallmarking standards, meaning it cannot legally be stamped or sold as 18ct gold.
